Jaiswal also noted that there are currently six Indian-flagged commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf, and 12 foreign vessels are transporting cargo to India. He added: "These vessels currently accommodate about 163 Indian mariners, and we are continuously monitoring their status."
The Indian Ministry of Shipping, in collaboration with diplomatic missions and local stakeholders, is always monitoring the movement of vessels and the status of Indian mariners. Jaiswal emphasized: "We are committed to the safety and welfare of our maritime community abroad."
International Concerns and Implications
This incident has occurred specifically in the context of increasing security risks in global maritime corridors, including the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, and Black Sea, where commercial vessels face frequent threats. Jaishankar, raised concerns regarding attacks on commercial vessels and mariners in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing the need to protect the security of mariners.
Jaishankar stated: "New challenges in the maritime domain have added to the old challenges on land. Attacks on commercial vessels and mariners in the Gulf and from the Red Sea to the Black Sea are on the rise, and this situation is absolutely unacceptable." He also called for caution and de-escalation of tensions in the Persian Gulf to protect civilian crews and ensure uninterrupted energy supply and global trade.
