South Korea is reviewing the expansion of its military operations in the Middle East. This decision has been made at the request of the United States, particularly from President Donald Trump, to provide support for the war in Iran.

Development of the Anti-Piracy Unit's Operational Area

Reports indicate that Seoul intends to expand its Cheonghae anti-piracy unit's operational area, which has been stationed in the Gulf of Aden since 2009, to the Gulf of Oman. This area connects to the Strait of Hormuz and holds significant strategic importance.

Government Plans to Extend Mission

The South Korean government, led by President Yoon Suk-yeol, is planning to present a proposal to parliament to extend the mission of this unit, which is set to expire at the end of this year. Additionally, the government may decide to send a corvette to the region to bolster operations.

The South Korean Ministry of Defense stated in a statement that it is reviewing sending this proposal to parliament to extend the anti-piracy unit's services before its expiration on December 31, 2026. The ministry also emphasized that no decisions have been made regarding the details of extending this unit's operations.

Conditions in the Gulf of Aden have worsened due to increased piracy activities compared to last year. The Cheonghae unit currently includes a 4,400-ton destroyer, a maritime operation helicopter, up to three fast boats, and about 300 service members.

President Yoon announced on September 18 that he does not intend to deploy military assets to the Middle East in a way that would drag the country into conflict, but stated that Seoul is considering a larger role in safeguarding navigation in the region.
