Sultan Haitham bin Tariq traveled to Britain on October 24, 2023, for an official state visit. This trip marks the first official visit of the Sultanate of Oman to Britain since 1982 and occurs at a time when economic and security cooperation between the two countries is in focus.

Objectives of the Visit and Bilateral Cooperation

The Sultan of Oman is visiting the country at the invitation of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. During this visit, the two countries are looking to expand cooperation in areas such as renewable energy, manufacturing, technology, and investment. These areas have previously been identified as high-potential fields for cooperation and are closely related to the goals of the "Oman Vision 2040." Oman’s long-term plan focuses on reducing dependence on oil and expanding manufacturing and service industries, and cooperation with Britain could help achieve these goals.

Oman's Security and Diplomatic Challenges

The Sultan of Oman’s visit to Britain comes at a time when tensions in the Persian Gulf, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, have increased. Oman is recognized as a key player in international efforts to reduce tensions and maintain its neutrality in the disputes between Iran and the United States. While Iran has made threats against Oman, the country seeks to maintain independence in its foreign policy.

During this visit, Sultan Haitham will also discuss the latest developments in the Strait of Hormuz with the British Prime Minister. This meeting provides an opportunity to explore mediation avenues and achieve peace agreements in the region.

Oman was previously a protectorate of Britain and gained independence in 1951. These collaborations have particularly expanded in military and security fields, including joint exercises and the development of defense capabilities. Sultan Haitham’s visit to Britain is an opportunity to coordinate the positions of the two countries regarding Gulf security and maritime security.

During this visit, the Sultan of Oman was met with an official and ceremonial welcome at Windsor Castle. The welcome program included ceremonial cannon fire, a carriage tour of Windsor, and a military honor guard reception. This visit will continue until October 26 and includes various meetings with business leaders and senior executives.

Sultan Haitham is striving to strengthen bilateral relations with Britain while enhancing Oman’s defense capabilities and maintaining its independence in foreign policy. This diplomatic approach could assist Oman in managing security and economic challenges.
