On Tuesday, Spain initiated the legal process for the extradition of James Cox Chambers, a supporter of Palestinians, to the United States. This decision was made despite protests from the government's leftist allies, who claim the case has been brought for political reasons.

Political and Social Sensitivities

This case is highly sensitive for the socialist government of Spain, which has a pro-Palestinian stance, and has drawn criticism from the Trump administration. Chambers, a 41-year-old American millionaire, has been under scrutiny due to his radical statements calling for the destruction of the United States. He was arrested on July 10 in Ibiza at the request of U.S. authorities and is currently in pre-trial detention in Madrid.

Financial Support and Allegations

Chambers, known as an anti-imperialist and communist, has discussed financial support for humanitarian efforts in Gaza in interviews and on social media, donating over one million dollars to these efforts. According to his legal team, the allegations against him include money laundering and conspiracy to disrupt public order. The U.S. Department of Justice has not yet released specific details regarding the charges against him.

The group "Palestine Operations," for which Chambers has funded the legal expenses of some members, has been designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the U.K. This group is under investigation for actions such as blocking entrances of defense companies linked to Israel and vandalizing them.

This case has attracted the attention of many Palestinian supporters, with 150 activists and notable figures, including Richard Gere, Greta Thunberg, and Fatima Bhutto, signing a letter urging Spain to prevent the continuation of the extradition process. Chambers' lawyer, Baltasar Garzón, has described the case as a political target, citing a lack of sufficient public evidence, and has filed his asylum request in Spain.

Spain's government spokesperson, Alma Saiz, stated that the decision to advance this case is merely a procedural action, and the cabinet will make a final decision after the court process concludes. The date for the court session will be determined in the coming weeks.
