The United States government, led by Donald Trump, the President of the country, indicated on Wednesday that it may be close to a peace agreement regarding the Ukraine war. Trump cited the ongoing negotiations as his main reason for not imposing new sanctions against Moscow.

The Sensitive Role of Peace Negotiations

Trump, speaking to reporters before departing for South Carolina, referred to the sensitive state of the peace negotiations and emphasized that the imposition of new economic sanctions could disrupt the diplomatic process. He said: "We are currently negotiating with Russia regarding Ukraine. For the first time in a long time, we may be close to an agreement. When you are close to an agreement and very sensitive negotiations are underway, you should not impose sanctions."

Ukraine's Position in the Negotiations

Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, had previously stated that Ukraine is ready to halt the current front of the war and engage in diplomatic negotiations to end the war with Russia. Zelensky emphasized in an interview that Kyiv is seeking security guarantees from the United States and European countries. He said: "Yes, we need to stop right now, and I think this is a real way to end this war."

Zelensky also emphasized that a ceasefire represents Ukraine's minimum expectations from Russia and that any negotiations should start based on the current front positions. He said: "In 2026, they had no success. They will not win on the battlefield."

The Role of Russia and China in Global Developments

Trump further referred to Russia's role in developments related to Iran, stating that this country has had little impact compared to U.S. military actions. He also noted that he could impose sanctions whenever he wants if necessary. He said: "We have made Iran extremely vulnerable. Russia has had little impact on Iran."

Meanwhile, Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the President of Russia, also announced that Trump and Vladimir Putin may meet on the sidelines of the upcoming APEC summit in China. This could be seen as an opportunity to strengthen negotiations and improve relations between the two countries.
