Stephen Butler, the Chargé d'Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait, emphasized his country's commitment to strengthening relations with Kuwait at the "Freedom 250" festival celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States' Independence Day. He described this cooperation as a long-standing friendship built on trust, collaboration, and a shared determination to face common challenges.

Historical Relations Between the Two Countries

Butler stated at the event that the two countries have stood together in defense of Kuwait's security and sovereignty. He also referenced the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Kuwait and the United States, established in 1961, noting that relations between the two nations date back to 1911, when the American hospital was founded in Kuwait. He emphasized the importance of this friendship, stating that different "generations" of Americans and Kuwaitis have established connections through education, medicine, trade, and culture.

Friendship in Difficult Times

Butler referred to the role of the United States in supporting Kuwait during the Iraqi invasion in 1990, stating that the U.S. led the international coalition that liberated the country in 1991. He added, "This friendship has also been tested in difficult moments" and continued that "these moments show that the relationship between the U.S. and Kuwait goes beyond diplomatic cooperation; it is a friendship strengthened by trust and shared challenges."

Butler also mentioned the reopening of the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait in June after nearly four months of operational pause due to security concerns, describing this event as one of the proudest moments of his life. He referenced U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit to Kuwait on June 24 and his meetings with the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and Foreign Minister Sheikh Jareh Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, which further highlight the importance of this bilateral cooperation.

Butler continued to emphasize the significance of the anniversary of U.S. Independence, stating, "The Freedom 250 festival honors the fundamental principles of the United States, especially the freedom and right of people to govern themselves" and added, "Freedom 250 cherishes this legacy and commits us to building a stronger, safer, and more prosperous America for future generations."

This event also celebrated American innovation and creativity, showcasing classic American cars and motorcycles, highlighting aspects of the culture and history of the country. One of these displays was a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette, which Butler described as a symbol of American innovation. This car was produced in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Butler's hometown.

Butler expressed his happiness for this anniversary and the enduring friendship between the two countries, saying, "On the 250th anniversary, I congratulate America and keep the Kuwaiti-American friendship alive." The festival was attended by Foreign Minister Sheikh Jareh Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, ambassadors from various countries, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives from international companies and brands.
