U.S. Republican and Democratic senators have informed President Donald Trump that he must reconsider the diesel supply agreement with Russia. These senators emphasized that the agreement violates U.S. laws that prohibit energy imports from Russia until the country ends its aggressions in Ukraine.

Pressure from Both Parties on Trump

Republican and Democratic senators stated in a joint statement: "Congress explicitly prohibited energy imports from Russia in 2022 to prevent funding for Vladimir Putin's brutal war against Ukraine." This statement has been issued by seven senators, four Republicans and three Democrats.

The senators also pointed out the government's failure to consult with Congress and provide necessary explanations regarding this decision, which is required by law. They emphasized: "The United States should not financially assist Putin while Russia continues to massacre Ukrainian civilians. The government must immediately reconsider this matter."

Economic and Political Impacts of the Agreement

This bipartisan criticism of Trump's agreement comes as strong support for his foreign policy has waned in the weeks leading up to the November 3 midterm elections. Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, one of the critics of the agreement, previously stated that the diesel agreement may be illegal and endanger American lives.

The Trump administration announced on Friday that Russia has agreed to supply diesel to global markets and has lifted U.S. temporary sanctions on Russian fuel imposed to reduce Moscow's revenue in the Ukraine war. While diesel prices, used for agriculture, home heating, and transportation, have approached their highest levels, some analysts predict that Trump's agreement with Moscow will not lead to a sustainable reduction in prices.

Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Busent stated in an interview that the Trump administration will continue to implement this agreement with all its legal powers, asserting that this agreement is in the interest of the American people and will reduce prices.
