Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, on October 17, strongly criticized Donald Trump's decision, the President of the United States, to suspend sanctions and tariffs on Russia, describing it as incorrect. Zelensky emphasized that this action would benefit the Russians and could lead to an increase in Moscow's attacks against Ukraine.
Zelensky's analysis of Trump's decision
Zelensky wrote in a post on social media X: "The decision to lift these sanctions seems incorrect to me. This action certainly only benefits the Russians." He was deeply concerned about the consequences of this decision on Ukraine's security situation and Russian attacks.

The Trump administration on Friday issued an executive order lifting some sanctions and tariffs related to Russia that were set to take effect next week. These sanctions included tariffs on Russian goods and penalties for purchasing oil and gas from the country, which were to be implemented under the "Lindsey Graham Sanctions Act" that Trump signed last month.
Consequences of Trump's decision
Trump explained that this lifting of sanctions was in the interest of the national interests of the United States. In fact, this law was designed to increase pressure on Russia due to its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Zelensky also noted that this action by Trump gives Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, more courage to continue attacks.
Zelensky continued: "This action only helps to increase their satisfaction and willingness to continue the slaughter of people." He also referred to recent Russian attacks that targeted over 15 power generation and transmission points in Ukraine.
Zelensky also mentioned the likelihood of increased Russian attacks in western Ukraine, saying: "Is Russia preparing for this? I think yes."
The Russian representative in investment, Kirill Dmitriev, described Trump's action as a "historic moment" and stated that if these sanctions were implemented, it could completely halt economic cooperation between Russia and the United States.
Analysts also believe that this decision could lead to an increase in oil prices, while the United States is on the brink of midterm elections and Republicans are looking to maintain control of Congress.
Ultimately, Zelensky predicted that the United States under Trump's leadership would continue to facilitate sanctions for Russia beyond this lifting of sanctions.
