A judge in the city of Ensenada in Baja California, Mexico, on Friday sentenced three men to 158 years in prison for the murder of two Australian surfers and their American friend. This tragic incident took place on April 27, 2024, when brothers Jake and Callum Robinson, along with their friend Carter Rudd, were attacked during their trip to Mexico.

Details of the Incident

The three surfers were camping in a remote area along the Pacific Ocean beaches in Mexico when they were brutally killed during an armed robbery. After several days, their bodies were found in a pit atop the cliffs, indicating the severity of the injuries inflicted upon them. These murders shocked the local community in Ensenada, where many tourists come each year to surf.

Judge's Ruling and Family Reactions

Judge Raul Hernandez stated that the defendants, known only by their first names Jesus Gerardo, Irino Francisco, and Angel Jesus, acted with premeditation and intent. Each was sentenced to 158 years and nine months in prison. Prosecutors sought over $100,000 in damages, but the judge denied this request, stating that compensation should be pursued through civil courts.

Page Rudd, Carter Rudd's mother, reacted to the ruling by saying, "There can never be complete justice for the loss of a child, but we are grateful that these men can never harm anyone again." The Robinsons' parents also traveled from Australia to attend the month-long trial. Martin Robinson expressed his feelings in court, stating, "Losing a child is hard for any parent, and we lost two children."

Jesus Gerardo's former partner, who is accused of leading the attack, was sentenced to 20 years in prison last November. He admitted to encouraging the robbery of the surfers and stated that he ignored their pleas to save their lives.

Baja California is one of Mexico's most violent states, grappling with organized crime and drug trafficking, although cartel violence typically does not affect tourists.
