Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the President of Brazil, and Flávio Bolsonaro, his right-wing rival, held a final and measured debate on Friday. This debate took place just two days before the second round of the Brazilian presidential elections, where both candidates engaged in severe criticisms of each other. Polls indicate that the election on Sunday could result in a tie between the two candidates.

Tension and Challenges in the Debate

The previous debate between the two candidates, held five days ago, was filled with insults and personal attacks, with almost no specific plans presented. However, in this debate, the candidates raised questions about the economic situation, infrastructure, and regional development. Lula criticized Bolsonaro's lack of experience, as a senator and son of the former right-wing President of Brazil, while Bolsonaro accused the President of leaving a "ruined" country. Lula remarked, "He doesn't know what hunger is," to which Bolsonaro responded, "Why are prices so high?".

Controversial Claims and Social Issues

Lula, 80 years old, repeatedly urged viewers to search for Bolsonaro's claims online, to which Bolsonaro replied, "Who runs Brazil, you or Google?". Bolsonaro also joked about Lula's missing finger, which he lost in a work accident as a metalworker. Lula responded that he wouldn't let "a paramilitary" call him "no finger," referring to allegations about Bolsonaro's ties to paramilitary groups in Rio de Janeiro. Bolsonaro apologized but asked Lula to apologize to the Brazilian people suffering from insecurity.

Lula also challenged his rival's plan to cut public spending in the style of Javier Milei, the President of Argentina. Bolsonaro replied, "I do the same here because you leave the country bankrupt." He promised to tackle crime, create 500,000 new prison spaces, and reduce government spending. Lula, recognized as Brazil's first working-class president, presents himself as a defender of democracy. Currently, Jair Bolsonaro is serving 27 years in prison for attempting a coup after losing the 2022 election to Lula.

Legal disputes in this bitter election campaign have been dominated by social media abuses. Both candidates went to court this week to seek disqualification of each other over media abuses. Lula's campaign accused the tech company Meta of "interfering" in favor of Bolsonaro through "algorithmic manipulation." Meta denied this accusation but acknowledged that some of Lula's campaign ads were mistakenly deactivated due to technical errors. An electoral court on Thursday gave Meta and X 24 hours to explain how they distribute political content and advertisements and how they use artificial intelligence. Bolsonaro's campaign also on Friday demanded that Lula's campaign be held accountable for "using public resources and digital structures to interfere" in the elections.
