France is drafting a new resolution for the United Nations Security Council aimed at creating an international mission to restore traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Diplomats have stated that this action is being coordinated with the United States to address growing concerns about maritime security in the region.

Discussions between the leaders of France and the United States

This new initiative follows talks on Monday evening between Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, and Donald Trump, the President of the United States, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Macron discussed several options in this meeting and stated that efforts to find diplomatic solutions are underway.

Macron emphasized: "We will be working on diplomatic solutions in the coming hours that could facilitate increased traffic of container ships and tankers even without a comprehensive agreement." This hopeful announcement comes amid rising global oil prices and concerns about the advances of Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Challenges facing the proposed resolution

Diplomats noted that France hopes to present the draft resolution to the Security Council soon, although they did not specify a timeline. Previous efforts at the United Nations to pass a similar resolution have failed due to a lack of support from permanent Security Council powers like China and Russia, which have resisted due to concerns about bias against Tehran in this matter.

The proposed resolution will emphasize the separation of security in this waterway from broader tensions with Iran and will highlight the common interests of all countries in maintaining freedom of navigation and access to energy resources. UN member states will seek to coordinate necessary actions to protect commercial transport through the Strait of Hormuz without taking an aggressive stance towards Iran, criticizing the United States, or linking this issue to other regional disputes.

A French diplomatic source stated: "France wants to work with the United States and its partners on a Security Council resolution that guarantees freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz."
