Mahmoud Abou Hamda, a Palestinian freelance photographer, won the photography award at the prestigious Bayeux ceremony for war reporters on Saturday. This award was given for his work from Gaza, and Abou Hamda also received the People's Choice Award for his report titled "What War Leaves Behind."

Absentee Presence and Video Message

Abou Hamda, due to his absence from the Bayeux ceremony in northwestern France, sent a video message to the event. This ceremony, held to honor war reporters and their efforts in covering news from crisis-affected areas, is recognized as one of the most important events of the year in this field.

Other Bayeux Award Winners

At this ceremony, The Washington Post, NPR (National Public Radio), and CNN received the main awards in the print, radio, and television categories respectively for their reports from Ukraine, Gaza, and the West Bank. The team from The Washington Post was recognized for telling the story of a Ukrainian soldier who was trapped in a war zone for 177 days.

Additionally, Anas Baba, a Palestinian NPR reporter, received the radio award for a report on the return of victims' bodies in Gaza. CNN reporters also won television awards and best video image for their report on Israeli soldiers in the West Bank.

Youth Photography Award

Associated Press photographer Jihad Al-Sharafi received the Youth Photography Award for a series of images titled "Endless War and Destruction in Gaza." One of his photos, showing football players on the field amid the ruins, became controversial in August in France and was removed from a sports photography festival in Deauville, but a court ruled for its reinstatement.

Liz Dunst, an experienced BBC reporter, chaired the jury for the Bayeux awards. These awards are seen as a recognition of the sacrifice and efforts of journalists in reporting on war and humanitarian events in crisis-affected and war-torn areas.
