The conference on patient and family experience in neonatal care in Oman concluded on Thursday with the aim of enhancing the quality of health and medical services. The conference was held under the slogan "From the very first moment, the care experience begins" and addressed the needs of patients and families in neonatal care.

Development of an Integrated Care System

At the end of the conference, recommendations were made for the development of an integrated care system focused on the needs of patients and families. These recommendations included expanding parental involvement in treatment decisions and care programs, institutionalizing empathetic communication, and enhancing the professional skills of healthcare staff. Additionally, the use of modern technologies and artificial intelligence to improve the quality and continuity of health services was suggested.

Family Involvement in Neonatal Care

This conference emphasized the importance of integrating family-centered care into the core activities of neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). It is noteworthy that parental involvement in clinical rounds and treatment decisions is recognized as essential partners in the care journey. Recommendations included updating the mechanisms for recruiting and evaluating healthcare staff with an emphasis on empathy skills, emotional intelligence, and effective communication.

Developing specialized skills in neonatal care and implementing ongoing training programs in therapeutic communication and delivering difficult news were also among the topics discussed at this conference. Furthermore, suggestions were made for creating mechanisms to respond to family feedback and inform them about improvements resulting from their comments.

The conference also highlighted the importance of forming multidisciplinary care teams that include medical, nursing, psychological, and social staff. Providing psychological and social support services to families and healthcare staff, improving the work environment, and enhancing the psychological and professional safety of staff were other topics of discussion.

At the end of this conference, the necessity of establishing a national observatory to monitor patient experience indicators and develop health practices was emphasized. It was also suggested to use artificial intelligence and predictive analytics to redesign health processes and reduce waiting times.

This conference was held with the aim of institutionalizing the concept of family-centered care and parental involvement in decision-making and the construction of care programs. Additionally, the exchange of experiences and successful practices among health institutions and provinces was presented as part of the conference's goals. Given that the conference included panel sessions and scientific lectures, experts from Oman and Saudi Arabia participated in it.
