The Ministry of Pharmaceuticals of India, in collaboration with the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), has reduced the prices of 137 cancer drugs. This action aims to reduce excessive trade margins, increase access to cancer treatments, and ease treatment costs for patients.

Details of the Price Reduction

This intervention is expected to reduce the retail prices of the identified cancer drugs by up to 70%, with this amount varying depending on the existing price structures. In 2019, the NPPA first initiated a reduction of trade margins for 42 cancer drugs with a 30% cap, resulting in a retail price reduction of up to 90% for 526 brands of cancer drugs.

List of Identified Drugs

The cancer drugs include immunotherapy drugs for over 20 types of cancer, denosumab for breast and prostate cancer patients, and pegfilgrastim for the prevention of neutropenia in cancer patients. Additionally, the drug bevacizumab, approved for the treatment of colorectal, ovarian, and cervical cancer, is included in this list. According to this announcement, the retail prices of commonly used drugs such as pembrolizumab, durvalumab, and osimertinib will be made readily available to cancer patients.

An expert committee comprising leading oncology specialists, physicians, and government officials has proposed the list of 137 drugs for the reduction of trade margins after necessary reviews. This list will be updated periodically. The NPPA has capped trade margins at 30% of the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) to control excessive trade margins in the distribution and retail channels.

Implications of This Action

This measure will provide significant relief, especially for patients who typically face a heavy financial burden from treatment costs. All manufacturers are required to inform the NPPA of their new prices within seven days of the gazette announcement. The new prices will take effect from November 9, and all retailers and hospitals must apply the reduced prices from this date.

Suppliers of cancer drugs who directly supply to hospitals and medical institutions are responsible for complying with the new prices from the effective date. State drug regulatory authorities must also take necessary actions to ensure compliance by manufacturers and distributors with these changes.

By reducing the costs of cancer drugs and improving access to them, this initiative helps alleviate the financial burden on patients and their families and supports the public health goal of equitable access to cancer treatment.
