Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have returned to the Indian stock market, investing ₹38,971 crore this week. This return has coincided with a sharp decline in global technology stocks, raising concerns about investments related to artificial intelligence and the potential decrease in data center costs.
Change in Investment Trends
Previously, foreign investors were selling Indian stocks due to global shifts towards AI-related markets. However, the recent correction in global AI stocks has made Indian stocks more attractive to foreign investors, leading to a change in investment flows.

Global stock markets faced heavy selling on Thursday, a trend that continued on Friday. Heavy selling in U.S. technology stocks completely wiped out post-election gains on Wall Street. Concerns about potential reductions in AI data center investments in the U.S. caused losses in global markets.
Market Analysis and Return of FPIs
V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, stated that last week witnessed a sudden shift in the investment trend of institutional investors. FPIs have become active buyers while domestic investors (DIIs) have remained sellers throughout all trading days. This active buying by FPIs and the resulting selling pressure have led to a significant increase in the market, with the Nifty index rising 7.58% during this period.
Vijayakumar added that this sudden change in FPIs' investment strategy is due to the selling of AI stocks in the U.S. and other AI-focused markets, including South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. This selling is linked to concerns about data center costs in the U.S.
The return of foreign investors comes at a time when global markets are assessing the speed and financial sustainability of AI infrastructure investments. According to Vijayakumar, India's position as a non-AI-related market, coupled with strong earnings growth and attractive valuations, has enhanced its appeal to foreign investors.
