U.S. stock markets saw a significant increase on Wednesday following the decisive victory of the Democrats in the midterm elections. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 1,150 points at the start of trading, reaching 33,250 points. Additionally, the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 also experienced notable increases.
Changes in Market Sentiment
This significant rise in the market indicates a reversal of the trend from the previous night, where Nasdaq 100 futures had fallen by 1 to 2.5 percent. However, with the release of initial election results, market sentiment changed significantly, and forecasts indicated that the Democrats would gain control of both houses of the U.S. Congress.

The Nasdaq index opened with a 1.5 percent increase, and the S&P 500 rose by over 1.2 percent. Additionally, the Russell 2000 index, which tracks small and mid-sized companies, increased by 2 percent, indicating broad growth in U.S. stock markets.
Political Implications of the Elections
The U.S. midterm elections, held on November 3, affect all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and about one-third of the 100 Senate seats. These elections are particularly significant due to their occurrence in the middle of Donald Trump's second presidential term, determining the composition of Congress for the remaining two years of his presidency.
Democratic control of Congress could lead to increased regulatory oversight of Trump's economic, trade, and geopolitical policies, although the President will still retain executive powers and veto rights.
Rajani Sinha, Chief Economist at CareEdge Ratings, pointed to the implications of the Democrats' victories for India, stating that these results could be somewhat favorable for India, especially considering the potential decline in the value of the U.S. dollar and improved foreign investment flows.
She also noted the geopolitical implications of Democratic leadership in Congress, suggesting that this could lead to greater oversight of military spending and U.S. interventions in conflicts, as well as contribute to strengthening diplomacy.
