Relatives of 69 victims of the deadly train accident in Spain are anxiously waiting for the identification of the bodies. This incident, which occurred in the central region of Castilla-La Mancha, is considered one of the deadliest rail disasters in Europe this century and has raised new questions about the safety of the high-speed rail network in the second largest country in the world.

The Painful Wait for Families

Families are assisting authorities by providing DNA samples to help identify the victims. They are facing a painful wait as rescue teams search for remains and examine bodies in the morgues. Javier Barrio, a relative of the victims, in the city of Toledo, which has received the highest number of bodies, said: "We are doing everything we can and crying. My two children are with me and helping me, but it is really a tough situation." His wife, Carmen de Santanta, was on one of the trains, and Barrio believes the chances of finding her alive are very slim.

Victim Statistics and Official Actions

The governor of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, has stated that "we do not rule out the possibility of more victims." He mentioned that emergency services have collected "31 bags of partial remains," complicating the identification process. Judicial authorities have also announced that there are 67 active missing person reports, 14 of which involve foreign nationals. These reports include citizens from the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Tunisia, and the Czech Republic. Additionally, the Portuguese government has announced that a Portuguese citizen who was working on one of the trains is among the victims.

Currently, 39 of the injured are hospitalized in Castilla-La Mancha, and García-Page has announced that their condition is "reasonably positive" and improving.

Political and Safety Implications

This accident occurred on a key line connecting Madrid to the southern city of Seville. In January, a similar accident on the same line in the Andalusia region left 46 dead. The train drivers' union, Semaf, has called for two new strikes on November 10 and 12 against the state operator Renfe and has urged the government to take "structural measures" for rail safety.

Pedro Sánchez, the Prime Minister of Spain, who is facing challenges in polls ahead of the general election on November 29, has acknowledged that trust in the high-speed rail network has been "broken" and has promised to provide "solutions" to prevent future accidents. Socialist Transport Minister Óscar Puente has rejected calls from right-wing opponents for his resignation, stating that his duty is to improve the system and restore public confidence.

The accident occurred when a Renfe train collided with the rear of a stopped Irio train. A malfunction in the automatic safety system LZB had stopped all trains in a 63-kilometer section, and the control center later authorized the Renfe train to proceed while the Irio train was still stopped.

Puente stated that the LZB system, while not the most modern, is "very reliable" and is also used in other European countries including the UK, Germany, and Austria.

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the People's Conservative Party, which is leading in most polls, has accused the government of "failing to replace an outdated security system in a timely manner." He said at a press conference: "If they do not resign, we will put them aside at the ballot box."
