The midterm election competition in the state of Michigan is heavily influenced by economic issues and the war in Iran. In this context, Abdul Al-Saeed, a doctor and Democratic representative, is facing off against Mike Rogers, a Republican representative and Donald Trump's choice. Poll results indicate that these two candidates are in a dead heat.
Local Concerns About the War in Iran
Mike, a 67-year-old retired Chrysler worker, is worried about the war in Iran and its costs for taxpayers. He notes that his son is serving in the Middle East, saying, "This issue is on my mind every day. I would prefer my taxes to go towards medical services for needy families." Mike expressed strong concern about the possibility of Republicans taking control of the Senate, stating, "This man is extremely dangerous."

On the other side of the street, Rich Dimichel, a 78-year-old retired Chrysler worker, supports the Republican candidate. Wearing a hat with the Italian flag, he hopes that Abdul Al-Saeed does not make it to the Senate and accuses him of criticizing Israel and making statements about Iran. Rich also criticized the Democratic Party, saying they have ignored older voters like him.
Both parties have spent heavily in this race, with aggressive ads running throughout the state of Michigan. This state, which voted for Joe Biden in 2020, has voted for Donald Trump in 2024 and is considered a battleground state in the elections.
Maurice Starr, an insurance employee and member of the auto workers' union, goes door-to-door to support union-backed candidates, all of whom are Democrats. He says, "People feel that the country is heading in the wrong direction and are asking themselves why they should vote?" Alongside the issue of the war in Iran, the cost of living is also frequently brought up in family discussions.
Sue Adamski, an 85-year-old woman, says, "I'm not one of those who support Trump. I didn't like him 15 years ago, and I still don't like him now. The cost of living has skyrocketed, and my income is decreasing."
