The free trade agreement between India and New Zealand will soon reach the implementation stage. Todd McClay, New Zealand's Minister of Trade and Investment, announced that the agreement is currently in the final stages of exchanging official notes to begin the implementation process.
Details of the Agreement and Business Opportunities
McClay noted in an interview that this agreement, which has been approved by a significant majority in the New Zealand Parliament, will provide Indian exporters with tariff-free access to the New Zealand market from day one of the agreement's implementation. He added, "We are now very close. This agreement was passed in our Parliament with 93 votes in favor and 26 against."

Impacts on Bilateral Trade
The mentioned agreement will provide significant opportunities for Indian exporters, and New Zealand has also committed to reducing tariffs on Indian goods to zero from day one. McClay stated, "You will see an increase in trade in chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and also machinery." Additionally, he pointed to services, especially information and communication technology, as one of the areas where bilateral trade could expand.
This agreement will also allow New Zealand greater access to the Indian market, which he described as a "victory" for both economies. McClay announced, "India and New Zealand have now created a commitment to each other, and both governments have said they trust each other and will respect these commitments."
The free trade agreement was signed in New Delhi on April 27, 2026, after nine months of negotiations. India has succeeded in securing tariff-free access for 100 percent of its exports to New Zealand under this agreement.
The New Zealand minister also referred to the ambitious goals set between Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to double bilateral trade by 2030. He added that bilateral trade is currently about NZD 4 billion and believes that the two countries can achieve this goal with this agreement.
McClay also announced that this agreement could help increase the movement of people between the two countries, including students, professionals, tourists, and business travelers. He believes that direct flights between India and New Zealand will be established within about a year, which will strengthen human relations.
This agreement, in the context of rising tariffs and uncertainty in global trade, represents the value of predictable trade rules and will create job and economic opportunities for both countries.
